Details are being published today about a tourist couple becoming victims of yet another street attack involving a gang of youths, this time in Albert Town, Otago.
Reading between the lines of a report that avoided using the word ‘tourists’ it sounds as if two foreign visitors were camping in the park when a fight broke out.
The Otago Daily Times wrote about multiple calls to police from residents who were “concerned at the ferocity and duration” of the attack in the town’s Dale Street at 12.44pm yesterday.
Police are desperately searching for the victims, who are likely to have been freedom camping in the park. They are concerned about their welfare.
A 17-year-old boy and 20-year-old man are due to appear in the Queenstown District Court today in relation to the incident.
A 15-year-old boy has been referred to police youth aid section.
Mr Paget also appealed for information about two people, believed to be travellers, who were in a vehicle involved in the incident.
The man and woman, who were in a car described as a Silver Mitsubishi Chariot, may be at risk, he said.
“We would like to speak to them as soon as possible. As the two are possibly visitors to New Zealand and may be transient or residing in camping grounds we would ask the general public to keep an eye out for it and report any sightings to police.
“We are very concerned about the wellbeing of the occupants and urge them to get in touch with police,” Mr Paget said.

The male victim was later revealed to be a 23 year old Dutch fruit picker – probably on a working holiday visa in New Zealand. He was knocked unconscious in the attack, he and his girlfriend were deeply shaken by their ordeal. source
Two of the four men charged in relation to the incident were remanded in custody overnight by Judge Michael Turner following a Youth Court appearance in Queenstown yesterday.
An 18-year-old, arrested on Saturday, was charged with offering to supply class C-controlled cannabis plant and stealing $270 cash from an unknown male at Albert Town on January 9.
A 20-year-old man, remanded in custody on Friday, faces one charge of assaulting a person unknown, with intent to injure him.
Both will reappear in the Youth Court tomorrow, along with a 15-year-old and a 17-year-old, who are also charged with assaulting a person unknown with intent to injure him.
All were granted interim name suppression by Judge Turner.
The 15-year-old was in CYF care. However, he had not been returned to Queenstown for yesterday’s court appearance.
Albert Town (named after Queen Victoria’s husband) was in the news recently when a young motorist, Rutger Hale, was killed by an object thrown from a passing car on the Lake Hawea to Albert Town Road. Police have yet to make any arrests.

This article has been updated. The victims were Dutch fruit pickers on a working holiday visa in New Zealand.
Police have arrested a gang of four youths for the attack. The oldest is aged 20 and the youngest is 15 and already in care. Their names have been suppressed.
