Chilean tourist beaten in NZ
The Nelson Mail is running another story about violence in the South Island town, this time a Chilean tourist has fallen foul of three members of Nelson’s community of drunken thugs.
The young man was attacked on the Church Steps, below the Nelson Cathedral – a popular tourist attraction.
This is is thought to be the third violent beating in the town in recent weeks:

Three teenagers punched and robbed a terrified Chilean tourist in broad daylight at the Church Steps on Saturday evening in another of the alcohol-fuelled attacks that are blighting Nelson.
The incident came on the heels of a confrontation in Vanguard St at 4am on Saturday, which put a 19-year-old in hospital after he was bashed with a weapon, possibly an iron bar. On October 2, hairdresser Brent Powell was bashed unconscious in Hardy St.
In the latest case, the 25-year-old tourist had just got off the Atomic Shuttle bus and was sitting on a bench using his laptop to locate his accommodation when he was set upon, Nelson CIB head Wayne McCoy said this morning. “It was a welcome to Nelson.”…read the full report here
Police later caught a 14 and 16 year old in possession of the man’s stolen belongings. A 15 year old was apprehended later.
The report goes on to state that Detective Senior Sergeant McCoy said ” it was disappointing that alcohol was again the driver of the offending. Intoxicated young people were causing many problems in Nelson.” and that is was time for the parents to take some responsibility for their children.
Fortunately all the man’s stolen property, including his passport and money, were returned to him.
We’re saddened to learn of yet another tourist that has been beaten and robbed in New Zealand, which was once thought to be a safe destination for travellers.

Japanese tourist age 23 (female) kidnapped, robbed and assaulted in Rotorua by four men
French tourist (male) raped at gunpoint near Opotiki,
American peace corp twins Adam and Alex Rahmlow, 21 were robbed of all their possessions by a man they tried to help in Amberley, Christchurch.
