Leaving NZ? share your exit interview here

Migrants in New Zealand are very rarely given the opportunity to say why they’ve decided to leave the country, often after investing a great deal of time and effort getting there.

We here at E2NZ would like to give you the chance to give feedback in your very own exit interview and we’re throwing this open to New Zealanders too. Perhaps we can find out if the same things are making both categories of people leave and why New Zealand is failing to keep people.

You can use any, or all of the questions; or just tell us in your own words.

  1. What country did you come from and why did you come to New Zealand?
  2. What visa did you enter New Zealand with?

  3. What sort of work/skill-set did you have before entering New Zealand and did you continue in this when you arrived? If not, why not?

  4. What were your initial reactions when you arrived. Did NZ meet your expectations and how did that change?

  5. What were the major challenges you faced and how did you try to meet them?

  6. What are the good things you found and what did you enjoy the most?

  7. What was the deciding factor that made you decide to leave New Zealand? Was this a single event or the culmination of a combination of circumstances?

  8. How easy was it making plans to leave New Zealand, what stumbling blocks are/were in your way?

  9. If you could have your time over again this there anything that you’d have done differently? what would your advice to other potential migrants be?

  10. What would it take to make you want to stay in New Zealand?

  11. What are your major challenges and aspirations after leaving New Zealand?

  1. “Make sure you know martial arts or carry a weapon because it is highly likely you will witness unjust violence or have it directed at you. You will want to defend yourself as there will be no Police intervention or justice served. The Justice system is a joke. Literally take your life into your own hands. The vast majority are uneducated violent binge drinkers that know they can get away with assault, theft, driving while intoxicated, and murder literally.”
I completely agree with this and it has also been my own experience. The police can completely persecute the victim and do the most immoral and wrong thing. You can get into trouble with the law for defending yourself and your property, and this is after you even contacted the police and got no assistance;- even on 111. It is disgusting and I think NZ is highly unsafe. It is a great place for thugs, criminals and bullies. I think that I am going to have to leave NZ on this basis, as I simply feel too unsafe.

  2. What country did you come from and why did you come to New Zealand?

    USA, skip Bush administration

What visa did you enter New Zealand with? Work visa

What sort of work/skill-set did you have before entering New Zealand and did you continue in this when you arrived? If not, why not?

Film industry. Difficult/impossible to be hired at same level/pay rate even though education/work experience exceeded locals. Was willing to train locals but they are too stubborn to admit a foreigner knows more. Their loss.

What were your initial reactions when you arrived. Did NZ meet your expectations and how did that change?

Beautiful landscape & impressive DOC amenities.

What were the major challenges you faced and how did you try to meet them?

Excessive alcoholism and violence perfectly acceptable amongst local population, even to WOMEN & CHILDREN. NZ not working on it’s “isms” racism/sexism/homophobia/etc. So many miserable people afraid to speak up for themselves or others. Police generally not supportive of victims of crime.

What are the good things you found and what did you enjoy the most?

Some very nice people, lovely nature.

What was the deciding factor that made you decide to leave New Zealand? Was this a single event or the culmination of a combination of circumstances?

Discrimination for being American, well-educated, intelligent, and outspoken about injustice. Discrimination in education, the workplace, and public services including health care. Violent crime survivor that saved a Maori woman’s life but was hospitalized and suffering permanent disability as result. Not one of the men served time, even with multiple witnesses testifying against them. Assailants are athletes and god forbid they should miss a game. If this happened in USA they would still be in jail.

How easy was it making plans to leave New Zealand, what stumbling blocks are/were in your way?

Easy. Shame to have wasted so much time, energy, and money on a place that has mastered it’s hype but is a war zone on the ground.

If you could have your time over again this there anything that you’d have done differently? what would your advice to other potential migrants be?

Make sure you know martial arts or carry a weapon because it is highly likely you will witness unjust violence or have it directed at you. You will want to defend yourself as there will be no Police intervention or justice served. The Justice system is a joke. Literally take your life into your own hands. The vast majority are uneducated violent binge drinkers that know they can get away with assault, theft, driving while intoxicated, and murder literally.

What would it take to make you want to stay in New Zealand?

Always wondered what NZ would be like without the substance abuse. Take away the alcohol for starters and see if the locals’ brains start developing normally. Why those people get that place is a mystery. Makes the good folks there look bad. Majority of intelligent NZers leave and for good reason.

What are your major challenges and aspirations after leaving New Zealand?

Living with permanent disability after unjust NZ violent crime with assailants unpunished. Just get off the plane on this side and justice will be served.

Feel so much safer in major American city even with legal gun ownership. The world is wising up to Kiwi’s. So much lost potential. Apologies to the minority of good folks there, but even you know this is true.
