Murdered Woman’s British Friends Forced To Busk Until Flights Resume

There was an interesting story in today’s Press about a British couple, John and Gina Dunn, who flew to New Zealand to attend the funeral of Mrs Dunn’s best friend Nicky Barker, who was murdered in the Nelson campsite shootings.

The Dunns have been stranded in New Zealand by the volcanic ash cloud hanging over Europe and all flights are grounded until further notice.

There’s a lovely picture of them standing in the street, blithely smiling as they busk to earn some money to make ends meet whilst staying at the Beachcomber Motel.

The sharp eyed among you will have spotted that there is no unctuous comment about the “generosity of the local community” nor is there the usual “local people have rallied round and offered xyz to the couple who are enjoying their extended stay in our beautiful country ” they appear to have been simply abandoned to their fate.

Where is the sense of community in Nelson these days, Mrs Dunn’s best friend was murdered and now she’s singing for her supper? Come on people.

The last comment of the report will have many an immigrant nodding sagely:

“The Dunn’s, who borrowed money from family for the trip, are staying at Nelson’s Beachcomber Motel, but have no cash left.

`The longer we stay it just keeps hemorrhaging away,” said John.”

Welcome to New Zealand Mr and Mrs Dunne, we’re sorry for your loss and hope you make it home before you become destitute.

Well spotted! But it’s OK, they’re smiling and sun is shining – what more could a Brit ask for, pfffft.

A ha ha ha ha! (Insider’s joke)

    • Hi Stefan, those sort of comments appear so frequently in ‘tourists get robbed/raped/beaten in NZ’ stories that we’ve always wondered who the instigators were but presumed it was something the press were responsible for.

After all the recent brouhaha over the press only getting limited/censored information on crime reports, we’re thinking that may’ve been a misconception on our part.
