Dunedin Harbouring a Culture of Rape: Female Jogger Raped and Hog Tied – updates

Update 1: The day after this article was written police found a woman’s body in Dunedin’s Stathallan Street and have since confirmed her death is being treated as a homicide. A number of other scenes around the Dunedin area are being examined as part of the inquiry. The woman has been named as 51 year old Karin Ann Ross of Dunedin

Update 2: five days after this article was written a woman was punched and thrown from her bike as she cycled through Portsmouth Drive in Dunedin. She was punched about four times before being thrown onto the grass verge. Her attacker was described as Caucasian and in his 40s.

If you’re thinking about emigrating to Dunedin you may want to give it a wide berth until it sorts out its rape culture problem.

Police are releasing few details about a macabre attack in Dunedin last night in which a female jogger was tied up and sexually assaulted near Ross Creek reservoir at 9.15 pm shortly before nightfall.

Police are looking to hear from anyone who may have see a male, or saw anything suspicious, in the Ross Creek area any time between 7pm and 10pm.The man is described as European, tall, and of a skinny build. He is believed to have been wearing black shoes, a black t-shirt, and a pair of black Skins leggings with white writing. The 23-year-old victim was knocked over and tied up by her attacker before a dog arrived on the scene, causing the offender to run away.

A team of more than 20 police are currently involved in the investigation and have cordoned of the scene.

In October 2014 a march against Dunedin’s rape culture was staged after group of men posted explicit pictures of women on Facebook without their consent. There’s an annual Take Back The Night march every October in Dunedin. Unfortunately for the woman attacked in Ross Creek last night women are still unsafe on Dunedin’s streets and the city is still “arbouring a culture of rape”.

  1. I live in Dunedin and it does have many good points such as a beautiful harbour, good walks, friendly people, good sporting infrastructure and the vibrancy of the students. My main gripe is the American Frat House Movie style student culture that pervades. I go for a walk on a Saturday afternoon and you see sights like male students sticking bits of tube down throats with a funnel attached and pouring alcohol into their mates. I hear all sorts of stories of 13/14/15 year old school girls going into these party streets getting stoned or drunk and having lots of sex and generally being way out of their depth. (There is a ghetto of streets with parties going off in every flat and it all converges into big street parties). Most weekends the students light fires and pelt the fire brigade, ambulance staff and police with bottles when they try and restore order. So I can see why their are the ingredients of a rape culture caused of an absurdly macho alcohol culture. This tied into the good old NZ liberalism where the judicial consequences always seem to be fairly minimal when it comes to alcohol/drug antisocial behaviour.

    • No news on that body. A Chinese lady was beaten up in her own home in Dunedin recently by a complete stranger but the offender was too drunk to remember committing the offence and was therefore let off. That seems to be fairly typical these days.
