A large magnitude 5 earthquake rocked the North Island at 11.15pm on 16 April. It was centred 10km west of Tokoroa at a depth of 150km.

The quake was audible in Christchurch, where residents thought it was an aftershock following on from the 5.3 shake earlier the same day. See Rumble in Rolleston.
