The Fiji Club of New Zealand has issued a press release calling NZ state television’s token 2 week suspension of racist presenter Paul Henry “a joke.”
A TVNZ spokeswoman had initially supported Henry’s remarks by saying “The audience tell us over and over again that one of the things they love about Paul Henry is that he’s prepared to say the things we quietly think but are scared to say out loud.”
Henry’s offensive remarks were contained in a question to the Prime Minister when he asked John Key whether the outgoing Governor General of New Zealand, Sir Anand Satyanand (born and raised in in NZ and of Indo Fijian descent) was a New Zealander or not.
The release also mentions the recent schoolyard insult Henry delivered when he made fun of the Chief Minister of Delhi by appearing to deliberately mispronounce her name (Sheila Dikshit) in a story about the Commonwealth Games. The Fiji Club say that not only damaged relationships between the two countries but also put New Zealanders at the Commonwealth Games in danger.

Press Release: Fiji Club Of New Zealand
“The members and supporters of Fiji Club of New Zealand deem the suspension of taxpayer paid TV presenter Paul Henry for insulting our hardworking and illustrious Governor- General The Right Honorable Sir Anand Satyanand as a complete joke by the state-owned TVNZ”, said Alton Shameem JP the Community Leader, Founder and President of Fiji Club of New Zealand (FCNZ) at North Shore City, Auckland the City of Tolerance.
“Our members and supporters both nationally and internationally are devastated and saddened by the grossly unacceptable and outrageous racists, divisive, arrogant, condescending and insulting remarks of taxpayer paid TV presenter Paul Henry.
Recently, Paul Henry insulted and made fun of the Chief Minister of Delhi thereby putting our fellow New Zealand athletics and visitors at the Commonwealth Games in danger, and damaging the relationship between the economic powerhouse India and our country New Zealand “said Alton Shameem JP the Civic Leader, Founder, Chairman and President of Fiji Club of New Zealand (FCNZ).
“It is abundantly clear to the public that the taxpayer paid TV presenter Paul Henry is out of control and is constantly abusing, demeaning and mocking people who are making great contributions to humankind both nationally and internationally.
” The public has forcefully spoken against the racist, divisive, arrogant, insulting and condescending remarks, of taxpayer paid TV presenter Paul Henry and it is time for the state-funded TVNZ to fire him” said Alton Shameem JP the Community Leader, Founder, Chairman and President of Fiji Club of New Zealand (FCNZ).
At last – the ugly truth is out about racism in New Zealand and how ‘small town’ the country really is.
No matter how long one has lived in the country, and regardless of the contribution one has made to society, if you look different you can never be a true New Zealander.
