Elderly Chinese Tourists Robbed at Knifepoint in Hamilton
International news agencies are reporting that an elderly Chinese couple were robbed at knifepoint in Hamilton yesterday
“Two men, one armed with a knife, have robbed two Chinese visitors in broad daylight while they were walking in the popular Hamilton Gardens.
Police say the 60-year-old woman and her husband were followed before being confronted by two men in the gardens about 3pm on Monday.
“One of the offenders was armed with a knife which he used to cut the woman’s shirt and then cut away a money belt worn around her waist,” Detective Sergeant Nigel Keall said…” more here
What the report didn’t pick up on was this was the just latest in a string of armed robberies in Hamilton. On 4 March a woman was robbed at gunpoint whilst walking along the bank of the Waikato river.
All this is happening against a backdrop of crime in a town in decline, with reports of under age drinking, vandalism and thuggish behaviour. Local louts have also been throwing rocks and screaming abuse at tourists on excursions down the river. Read more about that here.
Waikato River Explorer owner Darren Mills told the Waikato Times that is was only a matter of time before someone was hurt. That someone was almost the Chinese tourist whose clothing was cut away by her attacker.
“Mr Mills was also concerned about the number of children “hanging around Wellington St beach” who are drinking alcohol. “I’m talking about children as young as 7 or 8 sitting down on the jetty drinking – it is unbelievable,” he said…” source
Unbelievable? we don’t think so, this could be remarkably commonplace for many small towns and villages in New Zealand. What else is there for these poverty stuck kids to do and what have they to aspire to when they grow up – other than become professional thieves, prey on tourists and live on benefits.
Isn’t this the sort of behaviour one would expect in third world countries?

“Bashing Tourists Now A National Pastime?”
Those are not our words but a direct quote from a thread on the Trademe.co.nz forum, a community comprised mostly of New Zealanders. It’s an interesting thought isn’t it, as are some of the replies.
But first, here’s how the discussion started, followed by a bit of the background.
“Welcome to New Zealand. 100% Violent.
http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10860674“
The link referred to in the post is a NZ Herald report about 2 German tourists getting beaten up and robbed in Kaitaia on 22 January.
They had inadvertently become the victims of crime because they slept overnight in a layby whilst waiting for replacement parts for their broken-down vehicle. Unfortunately for them they fell prey to something that has plagued other campervan tourists in New Zealand (read posts tagged Campervan) with every fresh incident doing nothing to improve the country’s image abroad.
The Herald report said
“The tourists told police the two men smashed the van’s windows then demanded the tourists’ wallets, which were handed over. One of the victims was struck in the face, although it was not clear whether that was with a fist or the piece of wood that was used to smash the windows.
Police were still looking for the second offender at edition time yesterday..” more here
Fortunately police have one man in custody, 2o year old Devaray Heremaia Cole.
The first reply to the Trademe thread went like this, remember these are New Zealanders talking.
“It’s not new….been plenty that have been murdered as well.”
Perhaps this person was thinking about the recent killing of 64 year old tourist, Robert Murray Wilkinson in Waihi Beach ? a crime that deeply shocked the quiet coastal community.
Another poster made the link with unemployment, which is high in the north
“it goes with the other national pasttime: unemployment
sort out unemployment and then no idle hands (excluding nut jobs as they need to be committed to a house on the premises of a prison)”
Fair comment, and it is ironic that one of the major employment industries in Northland is tourism, we’re guessing that is something these two muggers aren’t engaged in
This comment hit the nail on the head
“This seems to happen a lot up North. Maybe the tourism bureau should advise tourists not to travel north of Whangarei. Or to Tokoroa. Or Rotorua…………….or any of the other places tourists have been attacked lately.”
Now there’s the problem – it is a fine balance between warning tourists and scaring them off and killing the tourism industry. What is to be done? perhaps investment in other industries in the region makes sense, diversification is that name of the game. Think of the good that could’ve been done if the half a billion spent on the Hobbit film industry (most of it going offshore) had been spent on other industries in deprived areas of New Zealand.
Because the danger is, as one poster put it
“If we don’t tell them, Lonely Planet surely will.”

Italian Tourists Robbed on Marae in Jerusalem
A party of Italian tourists on a trip down the Wanganui River experienced a cultural exchange of different kind when they stopped to visit a Marae in the remote hamlet of Jerusalem, New Zealand. The group was robbed as they attended a dinner on the evening of 25 November. As you’ll see from the map above, even the Google van didn’t make it to this remote location.
“Twelve people travelling as part of a group of 48 Italian tourists staying at a Jerusalem marae on Sunday night had $5000 worth of gear taken by thieves.
As the group were attending a dinner about 7pm when the thieves snuck into the area where personal belongings were stored…”NZ Herald
The group left the marae soon after and returned to Wellington in time for the Hobbit premiere on Wednesday.
As is the case in most crimes involving tourists in New Zealand (and there are many of them) New Zealanders were as (more?) worried about their international reputation as they were about the plight of the tourists. Robberies are getting to be commonplace and tourists are seen as easy targets.
Nga Hononga Marae chairman Ron Hough said he was embarrassed by the behaviour of those responsible.
“Not only has this now happened, but it has tarnished the good name of Jerusalem and its people and we may now struggle to attract further tour groups to the town.”
Mr Hough admitted he had taken the crime very hard…
“We’re pretty sure the crime was done by outsiders though and it’s such a bad look for New Zealand tourism. We just don’t need stuff like this … I mean 48 overseas tourists, 12 of them get ripped off it just doesn’t look good at all”
I have had stuff stolen on a marae, though got it back a couple of weeks later as it was strongly suspected who the thief was and pressure was brought to bear. It was a middle aged man and local resident, closely associated with the marae. And a rellie too, though not close. He also stole a LOT of food brought in for a do, very early one morning – I saw him and he told me it was for his pigs. Yeah right. Entitled? Yep.

Haka Thugs Attack French Tourists Near Raglan
We’re saddened to hear of yet another tourist assault in New Zealand and the detrimental effects attacks like this have on its tourism industry.
Two French tourists, asleep in their campervan on Ohautira Rd, about 13km from Raglan were awoken by a man doing a haka outside their vehicle.
A police report on Scoop.co.nz said
“the couple, believed aged in their twenties, were sleeping in their campervan off Ohautira Rd when they were woken by a man doing a haka.
“The couple have then been accosted by a group of what we believe were five intoxicated men, who had turned up in a dark coloured four-door utility who said the couple had camped on private land and had to pay rent.
“The French man was punched and an attempt was made to drag him out of the vehicle before the couple had a variety of items taken from them and their attackers drove off. Though not resulting in serious injury, this is type of attack is concerning given the time it happened and the sense of isolation the victims would have felt.”
The investigating officer said
“an assault on any person was unacceptable but this particular incident had the potential to cause far reaching damage given the visitors were from overseas…” more here
Earlier this week we wrote about two Austrian tourists who were mugged in Palmerston North, they too had been travelling in a campervan through the Highbury district – notorious for its gang problem.
Then, as now, we’d like to reiterate our advice to tourists in New Zealand. That is to take every possible care with their personal safety and not to give lifts or rides to strangers: if you wouldn’t do it in your own country never do it in New Zealand. Never camp on the side of the road and only stay at registered campsites.
Be advised. New Zealand has a reputation for tourist attacks and robberies, campervan tourists often become crime victims.

Australian Honeymooners Lose It All In NZ
Tourists have again fallen victim to crime in New Zealand. We’re saddened to learn of the two Australian honeymooners whose wedding dress, suit and rings were stolen near the Milford road, South Island. The advice to not leave valuables in vehicles simply isn’t given to visitors, many of whom believe the myth that New Zealand is a safe place with a low crime rate.
Constable Glen Matheson, of Te Anau, said the honeymooners, from Melbourne, parked their campervan near Knobbs Flat on State Highway 94 and went for a two-hour walk on Saturday between 8am and 10am.
They returned to find the door of their vehicle open and several items to the value of $4000 taken, including her wedding dress, their wedding rings, his wedding suit, a large purple plastic suitcase, a laptop and camera gear… more here
This is only one of scores of thefts perpetrated every year against visitors to New Zealand. These crimes are impacting negatively on the tourism industry and causing grief to hundreds of people, yet no co-ordinated effort is made to prevent them.
Planning to visit New Zealand on a touring holiday, don’t fall victim to crime? Be informed, read our posts tagged campervan and tourist safety.
