International Mother’s Day, New Zealand plunges in ‘Best Place to be a Mum’ rankings
Finland has taken top place in rankings of the best countries in which to be a mother, with New Zealand toppling to 18th place.
Nine European countries and Australia take up the top 10 places, in what is going to be a blow to New Zealand’s fixation with its place in international ‘Best of’ tables.
In 2009 (OECD Report Citical of NZ Child Welfare Spending) we wrote about how New Zealand was sixth in that year’s best mum table, despite other data showing that children in this country were more disadvantaged than many other key countries in the developed world. New Zealand’s under investment in its young is now beginning to be reflected in the very surveys it used to be so proud of.
“Doing Better for Children, was the first time the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) had reported on child well-being within its 30 member countries.
It identified New Zealand’s biggest shortfall as its limited spending on young children (aged five and under), which was less than half the OECD average.
New Zealand was also struggling in terms of health, with the highest youth suicide rate in the OECD and an above-average child mortality rate. (see our ‘Stats’ page )” …
…“Children lived in poor material conditions, average family incomes were low by OECD standards and child poverty rates were high.
While children had high rates of educational achievement, there were large gaps between top and bottom performers.
Immunisation rates for measles were the second-worst in the OECD, and for whooping cough, the fifth-worst.
The report said the government should spend considerably more on younger, disadvantaged children and make sure high rates of spending on older children met the needs of the disadvantaged.” read the full article here OECD Report Citical of NZ Child Welfare Spending.
Jasmine Whitbread, Chief Executive of Save the Children International, said of this year’s best country to be a mum rankings:
“By investing in mothers and children, nations are investing in their future prosperity.
“If women are educated, are represented politically, and have access to good quality maternal and child care, then they and their children are much more likely to survive and thrive – and so are the societies they live in…”
You can download the full report here Surviving the first day, State of the World’s Mothers 2013. It shows New Zealand has a mortality rate in its under fives of 6 in 1,000 live births, or 390 deaths a year.

Elderly Chinese Tourists Robbed at Knifepoint in Hamilton
International news agencies are reporting that an elderly Chinese couple were robbed at knifepoint in Hamilton yesterday
“Two men, one armed with a knife, have robbed two Chinese visitors in broad daylight while they were walking in the popular Hamilton Gardens.
Police say the 60-year-old woman and her husband were followed before being confronted by two men in the gardens about 3pm on Monday.
“One of the offenders was armed with a knife which he used to cut the woman’s shirt and then cut away a money belt worn around her waist,” Detective Sergeant Nigel Keall said…” more here
What the report didn’t pick up on was this was the just latest in a string of armed robberies in Hamilton. On 4 March a woman was robbed at gunpoint whilst walking along the bank of the Waikato river.
All this is happening against a backdrop of crime in a town in decline, with reports of under age drinking, vandalism and thuggish behaviour. Local louts have also been throwing rocks and screaming abuse at tourists on excursions down the river. Read more about that here.
Waikato River Explorer owner Darren Mills told the Waikato Times that is was only a matter of time before someone was hurt. That someone was almost the Chinese tourist whose clothing was cut away by her attacker.
“Mr Mills was also concerned about the number of children “hanging around Wellington St beach” who are drinking alcohol. “I’m talking about children as young as 7 or 8 sitting down on the jetty drinking – it is unbelievable,” he said…” source
Unbelievable? we don’t think so, this could be remarkably commonplace for many small towns and villages in New Zealand. What else is there for these poverty stuck kids to do and what have they to aspire to when they grow up – other than become professional thieves, prey on tourists and live on benefits.
Isn’t this the sort of behaviour one would expect in third world countries?

Napier Police Warn Parents About Sexual Predator After Third Incident in Three Months
Napier police are warning about the dangers of sexual predators after a 17 year old female was sexually assaulted by a 15 year old youth in Woodhouse Place, Pirimai, at 11.30am on 31 January 2013. It was the third such attack in the areas in as many months.
“The offender was described as a teenage boy, around 15, who had followed the young woman on what she told police was a black BMX-style bicycle.
Mr Lynch said police were now reasonably confident the offender lived somewhere in the immediate area…” more here
The assault happened two days before an 8 year old was raped on Oreti Beach, near Invercargill. A 20 year old male has been arrested in connection with that attack. The week before an English tourist was raped and beaten on the walkway overlooking Owhanake Bay on Waiheke Island. 17 year old Cane Norton Kelland was arrested and charged in connection with the attack.
The attack is following a disturbing trend in New Zealand – that of sex attacks on children and young women by young males.
There have been many violent acts perpetrated by young teens over the last few years in New Zealand, the most heinous of which must surely be the rape and savage beating of a five year old European tourist on a campsite in Turangi last year. 16 year old Raurangi Marino was later sentenced to a mere 10 years imprisonment for burglary, sexual violation by rape and for causing grievous bodily harm.
According to a list published by Hawke’s Bay Today the three latest assaults are
“October 30, 2012: An 11-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a man described as aged about 20, slim and 1.7m tall, on the green belt along Georges Drive, Napier, about 4.30pm. The case has not been solved.
November 25, 2012: A 17-year-old girl was indecently assaulted near public toilets off Maadi Rd in Onekawa, Napier. Police later arrested a (16 year old) teenager after CCTV footage led to him being identified.
January 31: A 17-year-old girl is followed by a teenage boy on a bike and sexually assaulted in Woodhouse Place, Pirimai, Napier.” more here
One has to ask, is New Zealand failing its youth and what sort of dysfunctional society are these young males being brought up in?
And, should more be done to inform tourists and immigrants about the risks they are taking when visiting New Zealand, which is often portrayed as a safe destination abroad?

Gisborne Sportswoman DUI – Press Release from Conservative Party of New Zealand
The Conservative Party of New Zealand has added its voice to the storm of protest at a judge’s decision to allow a Kiwi sportswoman to walk free from court on a DUI charge, affording her the added privilege of permanent name suppression so that she could compete overseas.
PRESS RELEASE: Court Priority Misplaced
“Conservative Party Leader Colin Craig is pleased police are considering an appeal against the Gisborne District Court decision that saw a sportswoman discharged without conviction on drink driving charges, and granted permanent name suppression.
“It appears the facts were not at issue here, but that the discharge was based on the offender’s personal status and occupation,” Mr Craig says.“It’s entirely inappropriate to have a double standard when it comes to the application of the law,” he says.
“It doesn’t matter what a person’s individual status or occupation is; if they’ve been proven to have broken the law, they should be convicted.”
“The court’s priority in this case is misplaced. Justice is not about protecting the offender. It’s about protecting the general public and victims.”
“The general public were put at risk when this person broke the law, and there must be consequences for that. There certainly should have been a conviction in this case, at the minimum one for Excessive Blood Alcohol (EBA),” says Mr Craig.
“The public needs to know that the justice system will work on our behalf and not be swayed by an individual’s status.”

Eight Year Old Girl Raped At Oreti Beach
3News.co.nz is one of many media outlets today carrying the story of an eight year old child who was raped at Oreti Beach, near Invercargill in Southland at 4pm yesterday (2 February) http://www.3news.co.nz/Girl-8-raped-at-Southland-beach/tabid/423/articleID/285453/Default.aspx.
Coming just over a year since the brutal rape of a five year old at a camp site in Turangi we are saddened to hear of another assault on a child in New Zealand in a location where children are usually thought to be safe. Parents must be asking themselves where is safe for their children these days?
Our thoughts are with the girl and her family at this difficult time.
The police have released no details about the nationality of the child and are concentrating their efforts on catching the perpetrator of this vile act.
Discussion on Facebook suggested that the girl’s father caught the alleged perpetrator in the act, which happened in dunes 50 metres from the entrance to the beach. This has yet to be confirmed by the police.
Based on other recent attacks we think her attacker is likely to be a low income male in his youth with gang associations – possibly a gang prospect – with a history of childhood abuse, a dysfunctional family life and a drug user.
In January of last year Dr Kim McGregor, Executive Director of Rape Prevention Education wrote an open letter to John Key. He called for a Task-force on Action on Sexual Violence to be set-up in New Zealand and cited some horrendous child abuse figures. Read the task force’s report and recommendations here.
Far from being a great place to raise kids, the high level of sexual violence in New Zealand impacts 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 8 boys under the age of 16 years. For more about the significant problems of raising children in New Zealand please see our Education and Childrens Issues facts page.
