French Public Get to Hear About Tourist Crime in New Zealand
Rabbit Island, Wikipedia
Crimes against tourists in New Zealand is finally getting the international coverage it deserves after two young French women’s campervan was broken into at Rabbit Island, near Nelson.
Clémence De Montil and Carline Chenard are likely to write about their experiences in one of the websites we have in our “Other sites we like” links in the side bar Frogs-in-NZ. We fully expect these two women to become the object of a media focused charm offensive any moment now.
A report in the Nelson Mail said
A dream campervan holiday for two young French women is in tatters after an opportunistic thief broke into their van at Rabbit Island and took their valuables – and their story is likely to be read across France.
Carline Chenard and Clemence Montil, both 23, lost their passports, cash, bank cards and cameras on Friday afternoon when someone smashed the side window of the small campervan and removed their daypacks from under a blanket on the floor.
They had arrived in Nelson the day before and had been looking forward to writing all about their visit on the French traveller website Frogs-in-NZ, which has organised the van for five months in return for their reports.
This theft hit the news the day after a gun man robbed at least 4 parties of visitors at well known Auckland tourist spots – the Domain and Mount Eden. The man discharged his weapon into the ground as he made his escape. Read Armed Thief on the run in Auckland, in the NZ Herald.
We’ve blogged countless times about tourist vehicles, especially campervans, being targets for thieves in New Zealand yet tourists continue to be seen as easy targets. Read Visitors ‘often targeted’ by criminals in NZ by radionz.co.nz to realise just how common this problem is.
We’ve suggested public information campaigns, leaflets at airports and rental companies warning about high crime, we’ve even suggested safety deposit boxes at major tourism centres but still the thefts continue at epidemic proportions.
If you’re planning a holiday to New Zealand, please don’t believe the hype about it having low crime rates, leave your valuables under lock and key and never leave anything in a vehicle that you can’t afford to lose. We can’t say it any plainer than that.

Haka Thugs Attack French Tourists Near Raglan
We’re saddened to hear of yet another tourist assault in New Zealand and the detrimental effects attacks like this have on its tourism industry.
Two French tourists, asleep in their campervan on Ohautira Rd, about 13km from Raglan were awoken by a man doing a haka outside their vehicle.
A police report on Scoop.co.nz said
“the couple, believed aged in their twenties, were sleeping in their campervan off Ohautira Rd when they were woken by a man doing a haka.
“The couple have then been accosted by a group of what we believe were five intoxicated men, who had turned up in a dark coloured four-door utility who said the couple had camped on private land and had to pay rent.
“The French man was punched and an attempt was made to drag him out of the vehicle before the couple had a variety of items taken from them and their attackers drove off. Though not resulting in serious injury, this is type of attack is concerning given the time it happened and the sense of isolation the victims would have felt.”
The investigating officer said
“an assault on any person was unacceptable but this particular incident had the potential to cause far reaching damage given the visitors were from overseas…” more here
Earlier this week we wrote about two Austrian tourists who were mugged in Palmerston North, they too had been travelling in a campervan through the Highbury district – notorious for its gang problem.
Then, as now, we’d like to reiterate our advice to tourists in New Zealand. That is to take every possible care with their personal safety and not to give lifts or rides to strangers: if you wouldn’t do it in your own country never do it in New Zealand. Never camp on the side of the road and only stay at registered campsites.
Be advised. New Zealand has a reputation for tourist attacks and robberies, campervan tourists often become crime victims.

French Tourists’ Campervan Attack – Jail Sentences Handed Down
In May we wrote about three French tourists, Antonin Schopfer, 27, Guillaume Rey, 26, and Sebastien Vautier, 29 who were beaten and robbed as they camped in Mangamuka, Northland.
(See blogs Three French tourists beaten up in Northland Campervan Robbery, French tourists back in Northland to Help Catch Attackers and “Tourists Beaters up Un-Maori“)
The men were left beaten, bloodied and traumatised after an attack by three men who had made off with their money as they camped at the roadside in Northland.
A report of the trial of two of the accused appeared in the Northern Advocate who reported that 18-year-old Lewis Haddon and Bluray Joyce from Horeke, “were last week sentenced to four years nine months’ and four years’ jail, respectively, for the May 21 attack in which they forced their way into the sleeping tourists’ van and left all three with facial injuries.” There was no mention in the report about the alleged third assailant.
Third World
The paper reported that Northland MP, Kelvin Davis said attacks like this on tourists meant that
“Northland is increasingly being seen as a third-world destination in a first world country, because of this sort of thing“
and that
“If tourists stop coming here the New Zealand economy is going to go belly-up. We really need an education campaign to inform New Zealanders of our duty to take care of tourists and make them welcome.“

We’re pleased that this case has been resolved and hope that the three French tourists will find some closure in knowing two of their assailants are behind bars. Our best wishes are extended to them.
A duty of care to tourists should involve informing of them of risks to their personal safety and give advice on safe places in which to camp, adventure sports guidance, information on the complexities of Zealand’s unique road rules and information about areas where tourists are known to have fallen prey to criminal activities.
A number of foreign governments and external bodies have already issued safety and crime advice to their citizens with regards to New Zealand – Among them are Great Britain, The New Zealand/Japan Society, Australia, The Netherlands and China (click on links for details, they all open in new windows) all of which followed attacks, rapes, robberies and deaths of their nationals.
Far more needs to be done to protect and better inform tourists before thousands of them descend on New Zealand during next year’s rugby world cup, many of them using camper vans to traverse the country. New Zealand can ill afford any tourist related crime at a time when international attention will be very much focused on the country.

French Tourists Thought They Were Going To Die
The three French tourists beaten during a campervan robbery in Mangamuka, Northland, have spoken to stafff at the Dominion Post about their ordeal. The paper has named the men as Antonin Schopfer, 27, Guillaume Rey, 26, and Sebastien Vautier, 29. The friends say that the men who attacked them were posing as police officers.
“The trio were nearing the end of a three-week campervan trip and were tired after driving back from Cape Reinga and parked in a rest area near Mangamuka, east of Kaitaia. They were fast asleep when there was a knock on the window about 1.30am.
Mr Schopfer said two men claimed they were police officers and wanted them to open up.
When that failed they asked for money, and the frightened Frenchmen handed about $500 through a window.
But the cash was not enough.
“They started kicking the door and it exploded. They came into the van and started beating one of my friends and the other got punched in the face,” Mr Schopfer said
“They were saying they had a gun so the three of us really thought we were going to die. It was the worst moment of my life and it was the same for my friends.”
Though Mr Schopfer escaped injury, Mr Vautier was kicked and repeatedly punched – losing a tooth – while he was still in bed.
The two men made off with two cellphones and a camera.
The trio say they struggle to understand why such violence was necessary.
“They could have taken everything without beating us,” Mr Schopfer said. “One of them was beating my friend for no reason. Maybe they thought we had more money but my friend kept saying: `No, we’ve given you all the money’.”
Northland seems to be a particularly risky place for tourists at present, with many of the aggravated robberies on tourists overly violent and aggressive. It hasn’t helped either that some people have very publicly called for free campers to be ‘shot’. Calls like these invite the victimisation of innocent tourists.

“The Land Of Misadventure” – …”Northland has a high level of unemployment, a lot of low- income people and there are criminal groups targeting tourists at popular spots. Locals get robbed as well, but the tourists offer richer pickings for the criminals.
Though locals may lose their shoes, cellphone and the small sum of cash in their pockets, tourists were known to carry a lot more money, have expensive cameras and sometimes iPods and laptops. The latest attack and robbery of the three Frenchmen was typical…” Dom Post
We’ve often called for tourists, especially those using campervans, to be given more information about the dangers of crime in New Zealand and advice about areas to steer clear of. Sadly, it seems that the message still isn’t getting out.
If you’re planning to take a holiday in New Zealand be sure to find out about the risks before you leave. If you are British you may wish to read the travel advisory issued about New Zealand by the Foreign and Commonwealth office here.
