International news agencies are reporting that an elderly Chinese couple were robbed at knifepoint in Hamilton yesterday

“Two men, one armed with a knife, have robbed two Chinese visitors in broad daylight while they were walking in the popular Hamilton Gardens.

Police say the 60-year-old woman and her husband were followed before being confronted by two men in the gardens about 3pm on Monday.

“One of the offenders was armed with a knife which he used to cut the woman’s shirt and then cut away a money belt worn around her waist,” Detective Sergeant Nigel Keall said…” more here

What the report didn’t pick up on was this was the just latest in a string of armed robberies in Hamilton.  On 4 March a woman was robbed at gunpoint whilst walking along the bank of the Waikato river.

All this is happening against a backdrop of crime in a town in decline, with reports of under age drinking, vandalism and thuggish behaviour. Local louts have also been throwing rocks and screaming abuse at tourists on excursions down the river. Read more about that here.

Waikato River Explorer owner Darren Mills told the Waikato Times that is was only a matter of time before someone was hurt. That someone was almost the Chinese tourist whose clothing was cut away by her attacker.

“Mr Mills was also concerned about the number of children “hanging around Wellington St beach” who are drinking alcohol. “I’m talking about children as young as 7 or 8 sitting down on the jetty drinking – it is unbelievable,” he said…” source

Unbelievable? we don’t think so, this could be remarkably commonplace for many small towns and villages in New Zealand. What else is there for these poverty stuck kids to do and what have they to aspire to when they grow up – other than become professional thieves, prey on tourists and live on benefits.

Isn’t this the sort of behaviour one would expect in third world countries?

British tourists lose it all at Huka Falls, Taupo

Have you seen this van?

An intrepid pair of British travellers have lost most of their possessions when their campervan (above) was stolen from the Huka Falls car park.

There have been thefts from this area before and we believe there are, or used to be, signs warning people not to leave valuables in their vehicles. However, what are people supposed to do when they have no other options open to them? Before now we’ve suggested that major tourist centres in New Zealand provide security lockers for tourist’s valuables, rather like the left luggage lockers found at airports. However, despite tourist thefts reaching epidemic proportions in some parts New Zealand, our suggestions have gone unheeded.

Claire Barnham and Ben Horner had travelled to many countries without incident before arriving in New Zealand in March of 2012, drawn by the scenery and taking full advantage of it by deciding to travel around it in a campervan. It was only whilst there that they, like so many tourists before them, became the victims of crime.

Dodgy Countries

On the trip of a lifetime which began in December 2011, the couple had previously travelled through Turkey, Dubai, India, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei and Singapore before arriving in a cold, depressing Christchurch in March 2012. A relieved relative left a comment on their travel blog, saying

“Glad you made it through all the dodgy countries and are now somewhere with flushing toilets! It’s luxury from here on.”

Little did she know that the couple had just entered what could turn out to be the most dodgy country of them all and where they would lose everything.

“We’re now in New Zealand. Spent a few days in Christchurch where it’s very quiet and a bit depressing with everything blocked off because of the earthquake damage. We went to Akoroa, Mount Cook and Lake Tekapo. New Zealand is unbelievably beautiful. We arrived in Queenstown and, first thing tomorrow, we’ll start looking for jobs, places to live and shopping for a good coat. It’s bloody cold here!”

Ironically, as they left Queenstown on 21 January this year, headed for a trip around New Zealand and on to Australia and the Pacific Islands, they wrote about the trustworthiness of the locals and how they didn’t even have a key for their front door:

“Today we are leaving Queenstown to spend two months campervanning (check out the amazing renovated camper) around New Zealand before travelling through Australia, Vanuatu, Fiji, Samoa, American Samoa, and Hawaii. We will be updating the blog as we go, here is our entry for Queenstown…
Queenstown – We have spent almost ten months living in Queenstown. It is by far the most beautiful, amazing, energetic little town that either of us have ever been to, let alone lived in. We wi…ll definitely miss the place, and in particular waking up to the stunning views of Lake Wakatipu and the Remarkables mountain range.
Kiwis are the friendliest and most trustworthy people on earth, we never had to lock our front door (we never even had a key), and could rely on being picked up within five minutes if we had to hitchhike home from town.
We have both worked in jobs that we have enjoyed, both of us guiding at Segway on Q, Claire also working at the Remarkables Primary School and Ben at the British Lolly Shop. We have also ticked off a few things from our bucket lists, including sky diving, bungee jumping, canyon swinging, jet boating, paragliding, quad biking, and white water rafting. We have seen the famous and elusive kiwi bird and cruised through the breath-taking scenery at Milford Sound.
We love you Queenstown and we will be back!”
The couple made it up to the North Island where they visited Kaikoura, comparing it to Skegness, and then wrote about their bitter disappointment at becoming the victims of crime:
“Sooooooooo things have not gone well in the last two weeks. First, our camper was overheating as we were coming to the end of our South Island tour, we got a quote of $3000 for the fix but decided to get a second opinion in Wellington…
…It was whilst enjoying a swim in the naturally heated river in Taupo yesterday that our camper was broken into and stolen. We have lost everything but the swimming clothes we were wearing, and I mean everything – passports, bank cards, clothes, laptop, kindles, iPods, phones, gifts, souvenirs, backpacks, $6000 that we were going to get from a couple that wanted to buy our van at the end of our trip, the list goes on. Without ID we are struggling to access money but are hoping the police will be able to help with this.
Our travel insurance ran out two months ago and we could not renew it from outside of the UK and our car insurance does not include theft. Today we are supposed to be on a wine tour in Hawke’s Bay but instead we are at the home of a wonderful family that have taken us in and kept us going. Without them we would be feeling so much worse, although that does not seem possible right now. We have exactly three weeks left in New Zealand and needless to say our plans have changed. Anyway, we will do our best to enjoy the rest of our travels and will update the blog when we can, Ben & Claire.”
The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has for some time given this advice to British nationals visiting New Zealand.
Crime

“Crime levels are generally low, but street crime occurs in major towns and cities. Thefts from unattended vehicles, especially hire cars and camper vans in major tourist areas (the Coromandel Peninsula, Rotorua and Queenstown) have increased. There has also been an increase in the number of thefts from hotel rooms in some tourist areas. Don’t leave possessions in unattended vehicles even if out of sight in a locked boot. Don’t leave valuables in hotel rooms. Use the hotel safe if possible. Keep passports, travellers’ cheques, credit cards, etc separate.”
We hope the couple manage to get their belongings back before they leave the country in a few weeks time.

Napier Police Warn Parents About Sexual Predator After Third Incident in Three Months

February 5, 2013 Leave a comment

The alleyway into Woodhouse Place.

Napier police are warning about the dangers of sexual predators after a 17 year old female was sexually assaulted by a 15 year old youth in Woodhouse Place, Pirimai, at 11.30am on 31 January 2013. It was the third such attack in the areas in as many months.

“The offender was described as a teenage boy, around 15, who had followed the young woman on what she told police was a black BMX-style bicycle.
Mr Lynch said police were now reasonably confident the offender lived somewhere in the immediate area…” more here

The assault happened two days before an 8 year old was raped on Oreti Beach, near Invercargill. A 20 year old male has been arrested in connection with that attack. The week before an English tourist was raped and beaten on the  walkway overlooking Owhanake Bay on Waiheke Island.  17 year old Cane Norton Kelland was arrested and charged in connection with the attack.

The attack is following a disturbing trend in New Zealand – that of sex attacks on children and young women by young males.

There have been many violent acts perpetrated by young teens over the last few years in New Zealand, the most heinous of which must surely be the rape and savage beating of a five year old European tourist on a campsite in Turangi last year. 16 year old Raurangi Marino  was later sentenced to a mere 10 years imprisonment for burglary, sexual violation by rape and for causing grievous bodily harm.

According to a list published by Hawke’s Bay Today the three latest assaults are

“October 30, 2012: An 11-year-old girl was sexually assaulted by a man described as aged about 20, slim and 1.7m tall, on the green belt along Georges Drive, Napier, about 4.30pm. The case has not been solved.

November 25, 2012: A 17-year-old girl was indecently assaulted near public toilets off Maadi Rd in Onekawa, Napier. Police later arrested a (16 year old) teenager after CCTV footage led to him being identified.

January 31: A 17-year-old girl is followed by a teenage boy on a bike and sexually assaulted in Woodhouse Place, Pirimai, Napier.” more here

One has to ask, is New Zealand failing its youth and what sort of dysfunctional society are these young males being brought up in?

And, should more be done to inform tourists and immigrants about the risks they are taking when visiting New Zealand, which is often portrayed as a safe destination abroad?

Gisborne Sportswoman DUI – Press Release from Conservative Party of New Zealand

drink driving kills

The Conservative Party of New Zealand has added its voice to the storm of protest at a judge’s decision to allow a Kiwi sportswoman to walk free from court on a DUI charge, affording her the added privilege of permanent name suppression so that she could compete overseas.

PRESS RELEASE: Court Priority Misplaced

Conservative Party Leader Colin Craig is pleased police are considering an appeal against the Gisborne District Court decision that saw a sportswoman discharged without conviction on drink driving charges, and granted permanent name suppression.

“It appears the facts were not at issue here, but that the discharge was based on the offender’s personal status and occupation,” Mr Craig says.“It’s entirely inappropriate to have a double standard when it comes to the application of the law,” he says.

“It doesn’t matter what a person’s individual status or occupation is; if they’ve been proven to have broken the law, they should be convicted.”

“The court’s priority in this case is misplaced. Justice is not about protecting the offender. It’s about protecting the general public and victims.”

“The general public were put at risk when this person broke the law, and there must be consequences for that. There certainly should have been a conviction in this case, at the minimum one for Excessive Blood Alcohol (EBA),” says Mr Craig.

“The public needs to know that the justice system will work on our behalf and not be swayed by an individual’s status.”

Eight Year Old Girl Raped At Oreti Beach

3News.co.nz is one of many media outlets today carrying the story of an eight year old child who was raped at Oreti Beach, near Invercargill in Southland at 4pm yesterday (2 February) http://www.3news.co.nz/Girl-8-raped-at-Southland-beach/tabid/423/articleID/285453/Default.aspx.

Coming just over a year since the brutal rape of a five year old at a camp site in Turangi we are saddened to hear of another assault on a child in New Zealand in a location where children are usually thought to be safe. Parents must be asking themselves where is safe for their children these days?

Our thoughts are with the girl and her family at this difficult time.

The police have released no details about the nationality of the child and are concentrating their efforts on catching the perpetrator of this vile act.

Discussion on Facebook suggested that the girl’s father caught the alleged perpetrator in the act, which happened in dunes 50 metres from the entrance to the beach. This has yet to be confirmed by the police.

Based on other recent attacks we think her attacker is likely to be a low income male in his youth with gang associations – possibly a gang prospect – with a history of childhood abuse, a dysfunctional family life and a drug user.

In January of last year Dr Kim McGregor, Executive Director of Rape Prevention Education wrote an open letter to John Key. He called for a Task-force on Action on Sexual Violence to be set-up in New Zealand and cited some horrendous child abuse figures. Read the task force’s report and recommendations here.

Far from being a great place to raise kids, the high level of sexual violence in New Zealand impacts 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 8 boys under the age of 16 years. For more about the significant problems of raising children in New Zealand please see our Education and Childrens Issues facts page.
